In the Liszt Academy’s It Could Be Like This series, performers take on a special challenge. In this first concert, they explore Beethoven’s chamber works from different creative periods, highlighting how much freedom performers truly have within a composition. Beethoven was the first true “freelancer” in music history, an artist who broke free from church and court patronage, oftentimes composing for public concerts instead. Every one of his works is an experiment, a leap beyond convention. The performers, in turn, become co-creators, shaping the music through their individuality and temperament. How does a cello sonata sound when played by a fiery, passionate cellist? Or a piano trio performed by a reserved pianist? Should a slow movement sometimes move faster? Don’t worry, this isn’t acting or parody. With Balázs Fülei’s engaging guidance, the audience will discover just how fluid and flexible a piece of music can be – all within its own boundaries.
