In chamber music, performers constantly experiment with balance and consequently with tone color during rehearsals. In the closing concert of the It Could Be Like This series, Balázs Fülei guides the audience through this creative process, showing how much freedom musicians have to shape a composition in their own voice. Is interpretation a matter of freedom or of discipline? Works by French composers form the centerpiece of the evening, as the musicians perform selected passages in several versions. Can it be done this way? Even when the composer’s instructions set the framework, the music is reborn in the performer’s hands. Listen closely and decide for yourself — can it be done this way? Can you hear the difference? Yes! After this concert, you may find yourself listening with sharper ears at every performance you attend.
