In the Contrasts chamber music series, students and young artists of the Liszt Academy perform in a wide range of instrumental combinations. The program opens with Johannes Brahms’s Piano Trio in C minor, one of his most dramatic works, followed by György Ligeti’s pieces for piano four-hands. What messages do these composers convey through sound? The second half of the concert may well contain one of the most beautiful love messages ever written in music – the slow movement of Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major. Meanwhile, Alfred Desenclos’s saxophone quartet sends its own message to listeners, using the ingenious language of musical cryptography.
