László Fassang (organ, piano)
Johann Sebastian Bach performed and composed on three keyboard instruments: the clavichord, the harpsichord, and the organ. In his time, moving between these instruments was entirely natural, Bach himself often used the neutral term “Clavier” to label his keyboard works. In this concert at the Liszt Academy, László Fassang embraces that same spirit of versatility, performing alternately on a Steinway grand piano and the Voit organ. Though neither instrument is identical to those Bach once played, both are perfectly suited to convey his timeless messages. The program pairs pedagogical miniatures with grand, large-scale works – each reflecting and complementing the other. Through these pieces, the audience will journey deep into Bach’s world of thought and emotion, witnessing the astonishing architectural logic of his art: from the intimate two-part inventions, through the improvisatory fantasies and trio sonatas, all the way to the majestic five-voice fugue.
