The concert brings to life four masterpieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, all composed during the 1720s and 1730s, the period when Bach decided to leave the Köthen court to take up the cantor position in Leipzig. While most of his secular works date from Köthen, of the concertos featured in the program, only the Violin Concerto in E major is believed to have been composed at the princely court. The 12-movement Magnificat, composed for one of the Sundays of the Christmas season in 1723 – the very year Bach began his Leipzig tenure – stands out for its use of Latin, rather than the German typically heard in Lutheran churches. During the first half of his 27-year Leipzig career, Bach also wrote the Keyboard Concerto in A major and the cantata “Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir”, whose majestic opening chorus he later adapted into the Dona nobis pacem of the Mass in B minor. At this concert, the audience will hear the original German-language version of the cantata, performed by the Liszt Academy Symphony Orchestra and the New Liszt Ferenc Chamber Choir.
