Vrána, Tomáš
No. 22
Country: Czech Republic
Date of birth: 4 January, 1994
Tomáš Vrána is a laureate of many competitions at home and abroad, and has collaborated regularly with top Czech orchestras. He won the Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition in Mariánské Lázně, took first prize at the Bedřich Smetana International Competition in Pilsen, and triumphed at the Beethoven’s Hradec International Music Competition in 2022. With the Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava, he recorded Vítězslava Kaprálová’s complete works for piano and orchestra for the CPO label. He has become the first Czech pianist to record all three piano concertos by Béla Bartók under the baton of Hungarian conductor Gábor Káli – published by the Supraphon label in 2025. His Bartók recording has received praise from pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. He is a cofounder of the Duo Vrámoll, with which he has, among other things, made many YouTube videos and given theatrical performances with the title Music History in a Nutshell, taking an entertaining approach to popularising the history of classical music, especially with the youngest generations. As a composer, his focus is mainly on sacred choral music, works for piano and orchestra, pieces for solo instrument with piano accompaniment, and music for films and videogames.
