He began to play piano when he was six years old, and at the age of eight he studied with Jiangsu Symphony Orchestra soloist Xia Yijin, as well as with Zheng Wenchuan and Sima Wen Lan. He enrolled to the middle school and after that the high school affiliated to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He performed at the Nanjing Arts Institute Concert Hall, in the Steinway Hall at the New York International Music Festival, among others. Yuan Wang won first prize of his category at the seventy-third Steinway & Sons International Youth Piano Competition in 2009, and in 2011 the second prize (no first awarded) of the middle school category at the 4th Elena Richter International Piano Competition in Tokyo. The same year he was awarded second prize at the United States New York Piano International Music Competition.
