She began playing piano at the age of three under the guidance of Mayumi Kito, and took classes several years later with Keiko Ichino and Akiko Oshima. She studied music courses at Kikuzato High School with Kazuko Sadayuki, participated in several national competitions, and between 2012 and 2016 she pursued her degree with Katsumi Ueda at the Tokyo University of Arts. After graduation, she studied with Balázs Szokolay, and since 2017 she has been studying with Dávid Báll at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, in the master training. She participated in master classes of Aquiles Delle-Vigne, Nino Jvania, Boris Berman, Balázs Szokolay, András Kemenes and Rolf-Dieter Arens. In 2015, Karen Murata played with the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra in Weimar, Germany.
