Bartók World Competition & Festival String Quartet Competition 2021

APPLICANTS

The competition is open to string quartets composed by members of any nationality.  The combined ages of the string quartet members must not exceed 120 years at the beginning of the competition (25 October 2021). There is no minimum / maximum age to the members of the quartet.

Would it become necessary, one member of the quartet might be changed from the Video Qualifying round to the Preliminary. During the live rounds no changes are permitted anymore.

ROUNDS

The competition is divided into a Qualifying round by video, and three live competition rounds (Preliminary, Semi-final, Final) held at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. According to plans a 12 quartets enter the Preliminary, 6 quartets take part in the Semi-final, and 3 string quartets qualify for the Final. The competition ends with a Gala Concert including the prize giving ceremony.

The entire live competition is open to the public, and will be broadcast (by video streaming and/or television and radio) from the Liszt Academy.  Applicants to the Bartók World Competition give their consent to these recordings and broadcastings by their application.

Competitors are provided with hotel accommodation as long as they stay in the competition.

1st prize             12 000 EUR

2nd prize              8 000 EUR

3rd prize              4 000 EUR

Prizes cannot be shared.

Special prizes such as concert and recording opportunities will also be offered.

APPLICATION MATERIAL

Personal data and full competition repertoire is to be specified on the online application form.

As part of the application candidates shall also upload information of the string quartet

·       a professional photo (min. 2MB, 300 dpi, JPG)

·       a description (1000-3000 characters) listing professional studies, as well as common (quartet) achievements, competitions, masterclasses, performances over the last three years (doc or pdf)

·       video recording of the  required piece: see under Repertoire – Qualifying

(Mp4 max. 300MB)

on all four quartet members individually

·       a photocopy of current passport (or ID for EU citizens)

Only high quality and recent recordings (taken on or after 1 January 2020) will be accepted. Audio recording, CD, VHS will not be considered.

The recording should show all members of the applying string quartet. The movement should be recorded in a single take (no editing permitted).

Only complete application material will be considered.

A local jury nominated by the President of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music Budapest will decide on acceptance.
