Repertoire of the Bartók World Competition & Festival - Violin Competition 2017

 

Video Qualification

Candidates have to join to their application form good-quality video recordings (audio and video) of recent performances by themselves of the following works:

  •    one movement from J. S. Bach: Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006
  •    one piece from Paganini: 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, Op. 1
  •    one piece from the following list:
    •    Bartók: Romanian Folk Dances, BB 76 or
    •    Bartók: Hungarian Folk Dances for Violin and Piano (from Piano Pieces for Children Vols. 1-2. arranged by Tivadar Országh and Béla Bartók, 1934) or
    •    Bartók: Andante in A major for Violin and Piano, BB 26b

 

Preliminary

Candidates shall perform two pieces:

  •    at least one movement from:
    •    Bartók: Rhapsody No. 1, BB 94 or
    •    Bartók: Rhapsody No. 2, BB 96c
  •    at least one movement from J. S. Bach: Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV 1001-1006

Total duration is maximum 18 minutes.

 


 

Semi-final

Candidates shall have three options:

Option A:

  • Bartók: Violin Sonata No. 1, BB 84

Option B:

  • Bartók: Sonata for Solo Violin, BB 124

Option C:

  • one movement from
    • Bartók: Violin Sonata No. 1, BB 84 or
    • Bartók: Violin Sonata No. 2, BB 85 or
    • Bartók: Sonata for Solo Violin, BB 124 or
    • Bartók: Violin Sonata, BB 28 (1903)
  • any virtuoso piece from the attached list
  • first movement from any of the sonatas from the attached list

                  Total duration is maximum 30 minutes.

 

Final

Finalists will perform one concerto with the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra:

  • Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 3 in G major, K. 216 or
  • Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, K. 218 or
  • Mozart: Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, K. 219

 

Grand Final

Finalists will perform one concerto with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by János Kovács:

  • Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 1, BB 48a or
  • Bartók: Violin Concerto No. 2, BB 117 or
  • Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 or
  • Brahms: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77 or
  • Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
